Homeless shelter Assen will remain open day and night this year

The homeless shelter on the Havenkade in Assen will also remain open 24 hours a day for the rest of the year. That has been decided by the municipality of Assen.

The shelter, provided by the Salvation Army and WerkPro, had been open non-stop since November due to the colder winter months. That would last until April, but the municipality has decided to extend that period until the end of this year.

An evaluation in recent months shows that people ‘gained hope and perspective and came to rest’ due to the longer opening. “The target group feels more heard and taken seriously. In addition, homeless people are less in the city to bridge the period between day and night shelter. This prevents nuisance and promotes a sense of security,” the municipality writes.

The shelter has often been open non-stop in the past, for example during lockdowns and the winter months in corona time.
