Homeless shelter Assen offers shelter day and night

The homeless shelter on the Havenkade in Assen is open 24 hours a day this winter. From November 1 to April 1, the shelter offers shelter to people who need it every day.

The shelter is provided by the Salvation Army and WerkPro.

“When the other sees you as a person and takes you seriously, it does something to you,” says alderman Jan Broekema. “That is why we offer a place for homeless people in Assen, at least during the cold winter months, both at night and during the day.”

Since the outbreak of corona in 2020, the shelter has been open non-stop during the lockdown periods and the winter months. And that indeed did something to people: research by the RIVM shows that homeless people gained hope and perspective. They also calmed down.

Homeless people who want to make use of the winter shelter can report to the location on the Havenkade. In the spring of 2023, the municipality of Assen will look at what the reception will look like after that.
