Holstein Kiel has found a successor for sports director Uwe Stöver, who is leaving office at the end of the season. As the second-placed team in the 2nd Bundesliga announced on Sunday, Carsten Wehlmann is taking over the position. The 51-year-old from Hamburg worked as head scout and goalkeeping coach for Holstein Kiel between 2009 and 2018, and from 2018 to the end of 2023 he was responsible for sporting responsibility at SV Darmstadt 98.
Wehlmann, who will also be Vice President, is due to start next Monday as a result of his return. “Carsten Wehlmann fits the DNA of Holstein Kiel excellently in terms of personality, expertise and his basic attitude. He has also shown in the recent past that he can put together a competitive squad in a strong second division under economically reasonable conditions. “We therefore believe that with the commitment of Carsten Wehlmann, the club’s chosen course will continue successfully in the future,” said Chairman of the Supervisory Board Dr. Stefan Tholund.

“Of course I have followed the positive development of Holstein Kiel in the second division in recent years. I’m happy that I can now actively participate in it myself. Now for me in the coming weeks it’s about getting to know the team, the coaching team, the employees and the wider environment,” said Wehlmann. “The fact that Uwe Stöver supports me shows once again how the professional community is lived at Holstein Kiel. For the time being, he will accompany me in the handover process in day-to-day business and on match days, so that the transition can be as seamless and trouble-free as possible. I am looking forward to this collaboration and am eager to get started now.” Wehlmann had terminated his contract in Darmstadt on March 31, 2024, whereupon the Lilies announced an early end to the collaboration.
