Holstein Kiel: Hammarby’s interest in Fridjónsson meets with rejection

Just six games since 2021

Swedish first division club Hammarby IF are interested in signing Iceland international Hólmbert Aron Fridjónsson from second division club Holstein Kiel. Speculations about the 29-year-old are not well received by the “Storks”, although Fridjónsson has only played six games for Kiel since moving from Brescia in the summer of 2021.

In Allsvenskan, which starts the new season at the beginning of April, the transfer window is open until the end of March, so that a change of offensive power to Sweden would theoretically be possible. Holstein had invested EUR 150,000 1.5 years ago in the services of the left foot, who was thrown back early in his first season by a knee injury and as a result only collected 141 minutes in five short appearances. In February 2022, second division club Fridjónsson loaned out Lillestrøm SK to Norway until the end of the year, where the latter drew attention again with 13 goals in 36 games. The six-time national player, whose contract in Kiel runs until 2024, returned to the Förde for the new year, last played 45 minutes against Magdeburg and prepared a goal.

According to the newspaper “Aftonbladet”, Fridjónsson is said to have aroused interest in Hammarby, but an official offer has not yet been made in Kiel, as sports director Uwe Stöver told the “Kiel news‘ confirmed: ‘We haven’t received an offer, but we have already told the player and his agent that we don’t want to give up Hólmbert during this transfer period.’ . He had previously played regularly for a year. That was a completely different player than the one I knew from the first few months. (…) He brings something to us that we haven’t had before,” explained Holstein coach Marcel Rapp when asked in the “Picture“-Zeitung – and with a view to the interest from Hammarby hit the same horn as Stöver: “Giving up a first-elf player: I find it difficult as a coach.”

The recent injury concerns for Benedikt Pichler, Fin Bartels and Kwasi Wriedt in the Kiel offensive should also contribute significantly to the decision, so that Fridjónsson could be in the starting XI for the second time against Eintracht Braunschweig on Friday evening.
