Philipp Sander will apparently leave Holstein Kiel at the end of the season. According to a “Sky” report, Borussia Mönchengladbach has agreed on a transfer with the central midfielder. Due to an exit clause in the contract, the second division team has no say and has to let the homegrown crop go.

According to reports, the KSV has already been informed by Sander of his decision. Only last summer he extended his contract with his youth club until 2027; the contract previously expired in 2024. In the Transfermarkt interview in January he said: “I know what I have at the club. The conversations confirmed this. We have found a solution that I believe is satisfactory for everyone involved. I feel very comfortable in Kiel, I like the club, it’s a family atmosphere and that’s why the decision was easy for me.”

The amount of the exit clause is not known, but it is quite possible that Sander will become Kiel’s most expensive homegrown product: Hauke Wahl went to SC Paderborn in 2015 for 500,000 euros. At the time of the extension and the associated negotiations about the amount of the clause, Sander’s market value was 750,000 euros; in the current season he increased this to 1.7 million euros. In the current squad, only three colleagues are worth more.

Gladbach, which is also said to be close to Ao Tanaka (Düsseldorf) and Marcel Hartel (St. Pauli), is currently preparing for possible departures in the summer with Sander. With Julian Weigl, Manu Koné, Christoph Kramer, Rocco Reitz, Florian Neuhaus and the awarded Oscar Fraulo, there are currently six players for this position in next season’s squad. However, there were always rumors of changes surrounding Koné and Neuhaus.
