As early as mid-April, several media reported on an impending agreement between second division club FC St. Pauli and the outgoing Holstein-Kiel captain Hauke Wahl. Now the change is apparently imminent: The 29-year-old completed the medical check-up with the “Kiezkickern” on Monday and then signed a contract until 2026, the “Hamburg evening paper‘ and the ‘Picture” newspaper coincidentally.
The club has yet to make an official announcement, but this is expected on Tuesday. Before that, they wanted to wait for the direct duel between the two second division teams last weekend. Wahl, who is letting his contract with the “Storchen” expire after five years at his own request, is the second new signing for the coming season after Philipp Treu St. Paulis from Freiburg. The league rivals Hannover 96 and 1. FC Nürnberg are also said to have been interested in signing the native of Hamburg, and the MLS clubs Nashville SC and Toronto FC have recently been linked to the election. In addition to sporting criteria, the fact that the right-footed player still lives in the Hanseatic city with his girlfriend may have played a role in the decision for St. Pauli.
FCSP sports director Andreas Bornemann, with whom Wahl signed his first professional contract in Kiel in 2013, recently had an interview with the “Hamburger Morgenpost“ explains: “A player of the quality of Hauke Wahl is probably interesting for many clubs, especially if he comes onto the market on a free transfer.”
