This month Meppel is all about happiness. All kinds of events have been devised by various organizations under the name ‘Festival of Happiness’. Cafés, shops, factories and schools are taking part, and the town hall cannot be left behind either. Children can go there for a special moment, which is normally only for parents: getting married.
And that is why the town hall has been brought into top condition. With balloons, rose petals, flower arrangements, a red carpet and other decorations, the real wedding feeling has been applied. “I’m going to marry children! As part of the Festival of Happiness, which is celebrated in October,” says wedding official Anja Montizaan. “A wedding is a beautiful party where everyone is happy and you have to share that joy.”
According to Montizaan, it is very logical that this is a wish of children. “Marriage is one of the most beautiful ways to declare love to someone. So if there’s a lot of fun tinkering with Grandma, they want to marry Grandma.” For example, today many marriages have been performed with grandfathers, grandmothers, parents or brothers and sisters.
