The Danish tennis player Holger Rune has qualified for the final of a masters tournament for the third time. The number 7 in the world did that at the expense of the Norwegian Casper Ruud, the global number 4. In 2 hours and 43 minutes it became 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-2 in Rome.
The 20-year-old Rune trailed 4-2 in the second set, but actually won four games in a row. In the decisive set he quickly ran out to 4-1 and he used his first game point at 5-2 on Ruud’s service. Rune was treated on the court halfway through the second set, but there seemed to be no question of a serious injury. After the treatment, he fought his way back into the game.
Rune won the masters tournament in Paris last year and was a finalist in Monte Carlo this year. This week in Rome, he caused a stunt by knocking out Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals.
To Medvedev
Rune will compete in the final against Daniil Medvedev, who qualified for the final of a masters tournament on clay for the first time. The number 3 in the world was 7-5 7-5 too strong for the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas in the Italian capital. The final was interrupted twice due to rain in Rome. It was doubtful for some time whether the semi-final could be completed on Saturday, but around 9.30 pm the course was still playable.
