Hoffenheim, who are currently so strong away from home, clinched a win in the Bundesliga against VfL Wolfsburg, who have been so weak at home this year. The guests climb up the table.
In the 3-2 away win in front of 19,000 spectators in the arena, Mohamed Amoura (14th and 56th) scored twice for Wolfsburg, Wouter Burger (31st and 62nd) and Grischa Prömel (50th) scored the victory for Hoffenheim.
Wolfsburg has now gone 13 Bundesliga home games without a win. The team is twelfth in the table with eight points. During the week, the “Wolves” lost at home against second division club Holstein Kiel in the second round of the DFB Cup. The air is getting thinner for coach Paul Simonis.
Schindzielorz: Simonis is still on the bench in Bremen
Wolfsburg’s managing director Sebastian Schindzielorz made it clear in the Sportschau interview: “We will continue to work with Paul in the coming days and play the Bremen game.” Overall, VfL simply defended too poorly: “If you concede three goals, it’s difficult to get points in the Bundesliga. We urgently need to put a stop to that, even if it was an improvement offensively compared to the game against Kiel.” On Tuesday, the Wolves lost 1-0 at home to the storks in the cup.

TSG remains unbeaten away from home
The mood in Hoffenheim is different. TSG 1899 remains unbeaten away from home in the Bundesliga this season. Coach Christian Ilzer’s team has now scored 13 out of 15 possible points abroad and climbed to sixth place in the table with 16 points. Hoffenheim’s victory was also a reaction to the exit from the DFB Cup. There they had a very unfortunate defeat at FC St. Pauli in the penalty shootout.
Ilzer said on the Sportschau microphone: “We can be very happy with the result, in terms of performance it wasn’t our top game. But we had a very good team spirit.” Sixth place is a snapshot: “We know where we come from.”
Wolfsburg coach Paul Simonis explained: “I think we performed well and lost undeservedly today.” However, his team did not adhere to the agreements in terms of defensive behavior, he explained: “That’s a shame because otherwise we played a good game.” His team has “not defended in an adult way”.

Wolfsburg got off to a better start
After a slow start, Wolfsburg’s lead fell out of nowhere. Christian Eriksen grabbed the ball in midfield and played it to Mattias Svanberg. He placed the ball perfectly in the slot on Amoura, and he curved freely in front of the Hoffenheim keeper Oliver Baumann and hit the empty goal.
It was also clear afterwards that VfL had big plans. In terms of fighting and running, the team was unrecognizable in terms of effort. There was initially no way for the people of Sinsheim to get through.
Hoffenheim is also extremely efficient
And they still scored with their very first chance. Robin Hranac played a long ball to the right side to Vladimír Coufal and Burger put his beautiful cross into the goal with a technically demanding left-footed shot.
After that it was an open exchange of blows. Wolfsburg wanted to show a direct reaction to the goal, Hoffenheim wanted to follow up. But despite all the intensity, the game had few chances. The first good chance came in stoppage time in the first half. Following a corner, the ball came to Amoura, who pulled it towards the goal with a side kick, but Baumann parried it. On the other side, Burger fired a volley past the goal. The 1-1 score at the break was fair. Two scoring opportunities led to two goals – that was efficient.

Hoffenheim’s lightning start after the break
In the second half, Hoffenheim got off to a lightning start and turned the game around. The ball came via a detour to substitute Andrej Kramarić on the left side and he crossed straight to the head of Prömel, who headed it in with great timing in the middle.
Wolfsburg strikes back
Wolfsburg shook briefly and then hit back. During a quick attack, Saël Kumbedi played the ball right into the slot to Amoura, who, free in front of Baumann, put the ball under the crossbar.
Hoffenheim reacts coldly
But Wolfsburg took the butter off their bread. The “Wolves” defended too passively, Prömel left Eriksen standing on the right side and passed the ball into the backcourt, where the incoming Burger was perfectly positioned.
As a result, Hoffenheim closed the center, defended extremely deep and waited for counterattacks. Because the Wolfsburg team had little idea about this and the final offensive practically didn’t take place, the guests took the lead over time.
Wolfsburg in Bremen, Hoffenheim against Leipzig
Wolfsburg will be visiting Werder Bremen on the next matchday on Friday evening (8:30 p.m.). Hoffenheim welcomes RB Leipzig on Saturday afternoon (3:30 p.m.).
