At the age of 25, Queen Elizabeth ascended the throne on February 6, 1952, the day of her father’s death. Normally Elizabeth does not show herself in public on this day and this year, despite the platinum anniversary of her title, that is probably no different. Her public calendar is empty on Sunday.
Cake
Prior to the anniversary, there was a special moment on Friday. The queen then looked at several presents and birthday cards she received from the people at Windsor Castle in the presence of her corgi Candy. Journalists were also present and took this wonderfully sweet photo:
special wish
On Saturday, Queen Elizabeth shared a special wish with the British people in a letter. She would like Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall and wife of her son Prince Charles, to be named Queen Consort when the time is right.
The title queen consort means that Camilla will soon stand before Charles as a full royal member, with the associated functions. Her late husband Prince Philip herself bore the title Prince Consort, as did Queen Victoria’s husband Prince Albert.
Varying opinions
Incidentally, not everyone is equally enthusiastic about the idea of taking Camilla as queen consort. According to a poll by youGov in 2015 that more than a third of Britons wished she were given a lower title out of respect for Princess Diana, Charles’s first wife, who died in 1997.
