It’s a black day for the television world: it has never been so painfully clear that NPO, RTL and SBS can no longer get away with bad content. A balloon show on RTL 4? The TV won’t even turn on.
There was a time when it really didn’t matter what was on television, because the viewer was still zapping on the couch. Those days are over now that there is so much content that the viewer has become very picky. RTL 4 that lets candidates blow a balloon? Ruud & Olcay who can display their emptiness for an hour? The TV won’t even turn on.
Tina is stunned
The Mediapark woke up today with a hangover: linear television has had a rare, poorly viewed TV evening. The audience share last night was 16 percent of all people over the age of six. By way of comparison: last week the average was 21 percent.
Viewing professor Tina Nijkamp is stunned. She writes: “How little TV has been watched. Incredibly intense. 16.1 percent! Normally this is around 25. At the end of spring around 20. So now 16?! I took a look, but I think this is the least watched TV evening EVER, outside of high summer anyway.”
Blow Up snaps
If few people watch TV, this is of course not only due to external factors such as sunny weather, but also to the offer. RTL 4, the largest commercial TV channel in our country, started a new season of the balloon show Blow Up yesterday. This time Martijn Krabbé does not present together with Chantal Janzen, but with Leonie ter Braak.
Martijn and Leonie scored 352 thousand viewers, representing a 10 percent market share. That is really very low for such a large TV channel, a bit of the Ruud & Olcay level. “What dramatic figures in the totals for Blow Up. This program really crashed. Viewing figure nightmare also for Leonie, who makes her debut on RTL 4 with Blow Up.”
It is also terrible for Martijn, says Tina. “He will never have scored so few goals in his career.”
Giovanni on one
AD readers give tips to the TV bosses to prevent such a TV drama in the future. “It’s also getting dumber with those TV shows. They pretend that the whole of the Netherlands is retarded.” writes Marian. Jan: “Maybe think of something less infantile?” And Wim: “This is something for kindergarten.”
The Giovanca Ostiana show Zing!, a new version of Korenslag, was the prime time winner with 861 thousand viewers (25 percent) on NPO 1. “Sing! is the only primetime program that still manages to score somewhat in absolute figures”, writes Joost Maiburg, the viewing figure connoisseur of RTL Boulevard.
