Historical low point Ajax: last place after defeat against PSV

The poison cup for Ajax is not yet empty. The team from Amsterdam were still ahead against PSV at halftime, but gave that away completely in the second half. The score was 5-2 in Eindhoven. As a result, Ajax drops to a historic eighteenth place in the Premier League.

Ajax’s start was surprising. In the first fifteen minutes, the last quarter had five gigantic chances. At first Brian Brobbey could only target Walter Benítez and missed. Brobbey was also at the basis of the second opportunity, where Steven Bergwijn missed. Three times it turned out to be a charm. A long shot by Branco van den Boomen ended behind Benítez: 0-1. Ajax should have expanded the score through Brobbey and Steven Berghuis, but failed to do so. The situation came quickly after Hirving Lozano’s equalizer.

Kristian Hlynsson, who was allowed to start in the starting line-up for Hedwiges Maduro, had a good header opportunity. Benítez kept PSV on its feet again. The game was then stopped for several minutes due to CPR from a supporter in the stands. After the interruption, Ajax took the lead again. This time Brobbey was accurate for the Amsterdam team: 1-2.

In the second half, Ajax was no longer a shadow of the team it was before half-time. Within fifteen minutes, PSV turned everything around. Lozano first shot a long shot onto the post next to goalkeeper Diant Ramaj, but Luuk de Jong tapped in the rebound: 2-2. Ismael Saibari then made it 3-2. The Mexican Lozano poured even more salt into Ajax’s wounds by making it 4 and 5-2.

After those goals, Ajax was no longer able to make a stand against PSV. The result was the historically last place in the Premier League. FC Volendam, which rises to sixteenth place, will be the opponent in the Johan Cruijff Arena next Thursday.

Ajax line-up: Ramaj; Gaaei, Sutalo, Avila, Hato; Van den Boomen, Taylor, Hlynsson; Berghuis (Godts/64) Brobbey, Bergwijn.
