US golfer Rose Zhang made history at the Americas Open in Jersey City, just outside New York.
The 20-year-old from California celebrated winning the tournament on her professional debut; the last time she managed this feat was on the Beverly Hanson LPGA Tour in 1951.
Zhang prevailed in the jump-off on the second extra hole against her US compatriot Jennifer Kupcho. Both had been in the lead at Liberty National Golf Club after four rounds of 279 shots each.
Zhang, who ranked first in the world amateur rankings for 141 weeks, received $412,500 for her achievement. “What’s happening here? I just can’t believe it,” said the winner: “To become a professional and to do it is just incredible.”
