The German skeleton team celebrates a historic success: With Christopher Grotheer and Axel Jungk, two athletes can look forward to Olympic medals. Grother secured the gold medal in Beijing on Friday, Jungk celebrated second place and the silver medal. These were the first medals for German skeleton athletes at the Olympic Games.
Grotheer presents strongly
Already in the third run, Christopher Grotheer put in a top run on the final day. The 29-year-old finished in 1:00:16 minutes. He was only faster in his first run when Grotheer set the track record in Beijing with 1:00:00.
Axel Jungk also showed a good performance in the third run and was able to secure his second place before the last round. Jungk finished in 1:00:31 minutes and was now 0:23 seconds ahead of third-placed Alexander Tretiakov (ROC).
Grotheer and Jungk bring projections to the finish
In the last and decisive run, both athletes showed no nerves. First, Jungk secured the medal with a time of 1:00:33 minutes in the final round. As the last runner, Grotheer brought his lead from the first three runs to the finish line with another good run and celebrated the gold medal exuberantly.
