Historic comeback: Cagliari turns 0-3 against Frosinone in 25 minutes

Only two teams were faster

Cagliari Calcio has made a historic comeback in Serie A. The team of coaching legend Claudio Ranieri was down 3-0 against Frosinone Calcio on matchday nine and turned the game around in front of their home crowd. The Rossoblú are only the eighth team in league history to convert a three-goal deficit into a win.

A brace from Matías Soulé (23rd and 37th minutes) and Marco Brescianini (49th) put Frosinone on the supposed winning path early on. For Cagliari everything looked like the tenth game in a row without a win, with just three points in the account before kick-off. Gaetano Oristanio scored the first goal in the 72nd minute, and four minutes later Antoine Makoumbou reduced the score to 2-3.

Absolute madness followed in stoppage time, reminiscent of Werder Bremen’s 3-2 win at Borussia Dortmund from the previous season. Leonardo Pavoletti, who was substituted at half-time, headed the much-celebrated equalizer in the 94th minute before scoring the winner two minutes later.

There were just 24 minutes between the first goal and the lead, only two clubs managed to catch up faster in Serie A history: Inter Milan went from 1-4 within 18 minutes in a 6-5 win in the derby against Milan in 1949 to 5:4 (to the match report), AS Bari only needed 14 minutes in a 4:3 win against AC Perugia in 2001 (to the match report).
