Hip-Hop Recap: The three best releases of the week

Overview of new rap releases: with Apsilon & LUVRE47, Takt32 & badmómzjay and Conway the Machine.

With the releases on Friday, May 5th, 2023, an exciting release May has started for the hip-hop world. There’s news to talk about from: Apsilon & LUVRE47, Takt32 & badmómzjay and Conway the Machine.

Apsilon, LUVRE47 – “90 Kilos”

The Berlin rappers Apsilon and LUVRE47 describe life in “Almanya” on their joint track. The socially critical lyrics are presented with an energetic flow that always sounds considered and controlled. A tightrope walk that the two manage impressively. As is usual for Apsilon and LUVRE47, “90 kilos” has a strong opinion. “No hope, all I feel is loneliness. Politics for ten percent, your heart is made of lead down here,” raps LUVRE47 in his part. The song criticizes the system and not from an academic perspective, but from below. The musical aspect does not take a back seat here, as is often the case in political German rap. The hook is already an earworm after the first hearing. The beat, produced by Arman and Palazzo, reflects the relationship between the harshness of the content and artistic standards. A music video for the track can be seen on YouTube. “90 Kilo” makes you hungry for Apsilon’s BLEI EP, which will be released on May 26th.

bar 32, badmómzjay – “RIP”

“RIP” is the name of the new song by Takt32 and badmómzjay, where the name says it all. Rappers are buried – at least lyrically. The two reckon with the scene: In their opinion, there is too much hypocrisy, too much talk, nothing behind it. The beat, for which Jumpa let loose on an 808 drum machine, underpins the track’s aggressive mood. The no-frills bars and flows of the two rappers, as well as the uncomplicated instrumental make “RIP” a real hit, which is ideal for the German hip-hop dance floors. Takt32 and badmómzjay released a video for the track on YouTube, consisting of live recordings of past joint concerts.

Conway the Machine – WON’T HE DO IT

After several delays, Conway the Machine’s new record WON’T HE DO IT is finally out. He had already released the first single “Super Bowl” with Juicy in February, “Quarters” and “The Chosen” followed in April. Now that the whole album is available, eagerly awaiting fans have unfortunately had to realize: With the singles you have already heard the highlights of WON’T HE DO IT. The LP isn’t bad, but it’s nothing special either. Last week we reported in HipHop-Recap that Conway didn’t need to rethink his concept because it still works well. That’s still true, although it would have been nice to see some variety on the record. Unfortunately, the whole work seems a bit uninspired – and even boring in places. Nevertheless, there are one or two strong moments. In addition to the singles, the track “Stab Out” should be mentioned. Hip-hop fans should at least listen to WON’T HE DO IT in its entirety once, since even a ailing Conway is still one of the best rappers of his generation.
