Hip Hop Recap: Featuring Nicki Minaj, Doja Cat, Lil Wayne, Ski Aggu and Bushido

We took a look at this week’s hip-hop releases – and summed them up for you.

Hip-hop had a few surprises up its sleeve this week. After Doja Cat shared a shadow of a female demon on her Instagram last Wednesday (August 23) and mentioned September 1st in the caption, speculation as to whether it could be a new single was confirmed today. But other US rap legends such as Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne also provided musical output. In Germany, Bushido released his single “Dark Knight”, which attracted quite a lot of attention before it was released, and Ski Aggu gives another foretaste of his “Denk mal drüber” tape, which is due out in October.

Nicki Minaj — “Last Time I Saw You”

The US rapper’s fifth studio album PRINK FRIDAY 2 is scheduled for release in November. A follow-up to her debut PINK FRIDAY, with which Nicki Minaj achieved her international breakthrough. With “Last Time I Saw You” she gives a foretaste of what her fans can expect two months before the release of the record. On the track you can hear the 40-year-old not only rapping, but also singing. Appropriately, the song’s melody is not only rap, but also pop and R&B influences. Lyrically, in the more sentimental work, Nicki Minaj talks about the last time he met someone and regretting not paying more attention to it.

“I wish I’da hugged you tighter the last time that I saw you / I wish l didn’t waste precious time that night when I called you / I wish I remembered to say I’d do anything for you / Maybe I pushed you away because I thought that I’d bore you”

Doja Cat — “Demons”

Recently Doja Cat announced their new album SCARLET out September 22nd. With “Demons” she now delivers the third single release after “Attention” and “Paint The Town Red”. In the latter, she flirts with the Grim Reaper in the music video and goes to the underworld. The video for “Demons” appears to be a continuation of that. Here, the rapper herself takes on the role of the demon stalking the new homeowner — played by Christina Ricci. Certain video scenes appear to be a homage to the 1982 film Poltergeist, and the bathtub scene here is reminiscent of The Shinning.

Lil Wayne — “Kat Food”

After his greatest hits album I AM MUSIC in March, Lil Wayne’s latest musical work “Kat Food” follows. On a sample of Missy Elliott’s “Work It,” produced by Charlie Handsome, FNZ and Rogét Chahayed, the 40-year-old raps about desire and his success, using cat food as a metaphor.

Bushido — “Dark Knight”

After his track “Jupiterring” last October, Bushido celebrates a small musical comeback with “Dark Knight”. This has been attracting attention since the single was announced four days ago (August 28). Because the German rapper shared the cover, which shows a torn joker card splattered with blood. Some fans then began to believe that it could be a reference to Capital Bra, who released music under the pseudonym “Joker Bra”. It was confirmed today that “Dark Knight” is a disstrack against the German rapper. In it, Bushido talks about the common past with Capital Bra and sums up his alleged knowledge of him. Capi has already reacted to the new release and seems rather unimpressed by it.

Ski Aggu — “gene skin”

With “Gensehaut” the rapper offers a party track à la Ski Aggu. Set to an electro beat by Themba and Nilly, Ski Aggu sums up success, heartbreak and a cell phone break.

“Don’t drink a Moët, I prefer the ALDI sparkling wine/KP, how much money is in my account/Get me Spekulatius biscuits, although it’s summer”
