Hiking in autumn – you should take this to heart

From BZ/dpa

Whether in the forest on the outskirts of the city, in the nearest low mountain range or in the Alps: a variety of hiking routes are particularly attractive in autumn.

However, there are also risks and circumstances that should be kept in mind.

With these five tips from the German Alpine Club (DAV) you are well prepared:

The sun sets earlier

While in July everything is still light at nine o’clock in the evening, in autumn at the end of September the sun sets two hours earlier.

Shorter tours reduce the risk of getting lost in the dark, explains Lorenz Berker from DAV Security Research. In addition, it usually gets very cold after sunset.

Check conditions on site

“In autumn, the temperature differences between peaks and valleys are particularly large – often the peaks are already white, while in the valley you can still sit in the sun in your T-shirt,” says Berker, referring to alpine tours. There can also be fields of fog in the valley, while hikers enjoy the beautiful sunshine further up.

Webcams could therefore give hikers a good impression of the conditions on site.

Pay attention to clothing

In addition to hiking equipment, the DAV also recommends having warmer clothing such as a fleece jacket in your backpack in autumn. Sticks also help you keep your balance – crampons could be helpful in snow and icy conditions.

Keep an eye on leaves and snow

In autumn, paths in shady areas or forest areas are often slippery due to fallen leaves or soil moisture. Therefore: wear waterproof shoes with strong tread soles. At higher altitudes, snow and ice can become an obstacle.

Berker: “In rocky terrain, holes can be covered by snow, which increases the risk of injury. Plus, it’s easy to slip.”

Enjoy the nature

Inexperienced hikers in particular should not become overconfident in autumn: “Rather, you could enjoy the play of colors and the still warm sun on leisurely tours before winter finally ends the hiking season for this year,” says Berker.
