Hikers from Erica through the heat to Jerusalem: ‘We survived’

In their hike of about five thousand kilometers to Jerusalem, Barry Gepken and Monique de Haas from Erica have now arrived in the German state of Thuringia. About a month ago they set course from Southeast Drenthe for their pilgrimage. “We’ve had a few hot days,” says Gepken.

Because, just like with our eastern neighbors, it has sometimes been sweltering hot in recent days. “Then you have to climb and there is hardly a village to eat and drink. But luckily we survived,” says Gepken.

What also helps is that the hiking couple – who are on the road with dog Maurice – do not adhere to a strict timetable. “We are not going to impose anything on ourselves, because then we will drive ourselves crazy, while we just want to empty the head.”

The pilgrimage is for an important part about contemplation and relaxation. “And that’s going well. In the evening we sit by a fire, and we make coffee and tea to relax. There are also a lot of lovely people here in Germany. So it’s not a problem that we are here for a while , because we like to do that. They are nice people to be with.”
