Higher minimum wage and more expensive beer: this will change as of January 1, 2024

A lot of things change every new year and that is no different on January 1, 2024. There are nice changes, but also setbacks. NH the most important things at a glance for you.

A number of things will also change in shops and supermarkets.

  • The excise duty on alcohol is going up considerably. For example, in the new year you will pay an average of 27 cents extra for a case of beer.
  • The excise tax on tobacco will also increase. A pack of cigarettes now costs 11.10 euros.
  • Albert Heijn will stop selling cigarettes on January 1. The supermarket chain is therefore anticipating the national ban that will take effect on July 1, 2024.
  • Sale of flavored e-cigarettes (vapes) is prohibited.
  • Officially it is not called a sugar tax, but the ‘consumption tax’ on non-alcoholic drinks, such as soft drinks and non-alcoholic beer, will increase. That was about 9 cents per liter and is now about 26 cents per liter. The government is implementing this increase to encourage people to buy fewer unhealthy drinks. That is why the consumption tax on mineral water will disappear completely.

On the road

  • All traffic fines will be increased by at least ten percent. For example, next year you will pay 420 euros for holding your phone while driving. That was 380 euros.
  • The discount on fuel excise duties will continue to exist, so refueling will not become more expensive. There were plans to abolish the discount from January 1, 2024, but the House of Representatives has put an end to this.
  • This also applies to the prices of train tickets and subscriptions with the NS. There was also an increase there, but it did not happen because the government committed 120 million euros. Prices for international trains will increase by 8 percent. Renting a public transport bicycle is also becoming more expensive: from 4.45 euros per day to 4.55 euros.

Other

  • From this year onwards, offices, companies and institutions will no longer be allowed to offer single-use plastic cups and containers. This applies to all places where ‘consumption on location’ takes place, such as in the office, in the catering industry or at festivals. The intention is to replace this with reusable cups and containers.
  • The state pension age will increase from 66 years and 10 months to 67 years.
