In various places in the Netherlands, people are worried about the high water that is coming. The concerns in North Holland seem to be not too bad. It is probably limited to a small peak on the sea side.
Due to the heavy rainfall and the supply of a lot of water via the rivers from Germany, the water levels are high in many places in the Netherlands and in the next 24 hours they are approaching a critical point in some places. “But we will not have any problems with that in North Holland,” says a spokesperson for Rijkswaterstaat West-Nederland Noord.
The water can be very high, especially in areas around the Rhine and some parts of the IJsselmeer area, although flooding is not expected anywhere. “In North Holland, it will be slightly higher and somewhat stormy on the sea side during the night from Thursday to Friday,” the spokesperson said. “The level in the North Sea Canal and in the Amsterdam Rhine Canal is still fairly normal for this time of year.”
Peak at night
“We expect the peak above the sea around 1 a.m., which will probably be two meters above NAP. We will probably also close the small lock, the middle lock and the southern lock at IJmuiden for a while. But that will probably only take ten minutes to a maximum of hour. After that, the level drops. We expect that with the first high tide after that, the water will no longer be that high. So North Holland will have already reached its peak.”
