They fled from Putin’s bombs in Ukraine to the safety of Berlin. On Monday, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier (66) visited the 105 orphans from Odessa.
The group arrived in Berlin on Friday. The trip was organized by the Jewish education and aid organization Chabad Berlin, which worked together with a children’s home run by the Jewish community in Odessa.
Steinmeier praised the willingness to help. “Not only the children and young people, but also the adults who will come need our help,” he said.
The Federal President was accompanied by his wife Elke Büdenbender (60) and Berlin’s Education Senator Astrid-Sabine Busse (64, SPD).
He thanked Chabad Berlin and Rabbi Yehuda Teichtal (50) and spoke of a great effort and important help. “This one deserves a lot of attention.”

On Tuesday morning around 2 a.m., 120 other refugee children and their mothers from Odessa arrived in the capital.
Rabbi Teichtal: “We are happy to be able to offer the children a safe haven. 80 years ago, Jews had to flee Germany. Today Germany takes in Jewish refugees. What a development!”
