The German high jumper Tobias Potye is getting closer and closer to the international elite. At the Diamond League Meeting in Chorzow, the Munich player ventured into new spheres. Gina Lückenkemper disappointed.

The German high jumper Tobias Potye delivered the best competition of his career five weeks before the World Athletics Championships and recommended himself for the title fights.

The man from Munich impressed at the Diamond League meeting in Chorzow, Poland, with a personal best of 2.34 meters and third place. The runner-up at the European Championships jumped four centimeters higher than ever before, improving his home record twice and surpassing the previous year’s world record.

Potye confident: “That’s not all”

“It was awesome to jump here today. I knew immediately after warming up that something was going to happen,” said the 28-year-old, who initially had problems with his run-up, on the Sky TV channel. “I’m watching the World Cup very closely, but that’s not all.”

Olympic champion Gianmarco Tamberi of Italy was equal second due to fewer failed attempts. The winner was Mutaz Essa Barshim, Qatar’s Olympic gold medalist in Tokyo 2021, who failed twice at 2.34 meters and then crossed 2.36 meters with the last remaining attempt.

Lückenkemper dissatisfied with performance

Gina Lückenkemper is still a long way from the world elite over 100 meters. After a weak start, the European champion only finished seventh in 11.09 seconds. Sha’Carri Richardson from the USA won in a strong 10.76 seconds, the Olympic bronze medalist Shericka Jackson from Jamaica came in second in 10.78 seconds. “It was just total crap at the front,” said Lückenkemper.

In the pole vault, Bo Kanda Lita Baehre, who came second at the European Championships, took fifth place with 5.71 meters. A week after winning the German championship title with 5.82 meters, this time 5.81 meters were too much for the Leverkusen player. The Swedish Olympic champion and world record holder Armand Duplantis won with 6.01 meters.

At the top-class meeting, Jakob Ingebrigtsen from Norway provided another highlight, he increased his European record over 1500 meters to 3:27.14 minutes. The World Championships in Budapest will take place from August 19th to 27th.
