After months of speculation, it is clear that Míchel is Ajax’s new trainer. Yesterday the Spanish coach signed a two-year contract. Is he the right man to turn the tide in Amsterdam? On NH Radio, Fabian Nagtzaam said on behalf of the supporter association that he is positive. “He wants to play attacking football and we like to see that at Ajax.”
“We want to see recognizable Ajax football in Amsterdam,” Fabian Nagtzaam is clear in our radio program The Breakfast Table. The leader of the supporters’ association is hopeful that Míchel is the right trainer for this. “Despite the relegation with Girona, he has shown many good offensive statistics with that club. For example, Girona finished in eighth place with ball contacts in the penalty area. That says everything about the trainer.”
Craving for prizes
Nagtzaam: “Jordi (technical director of Ajax) is currently working hard to balance the group. That means buying and selling players. Attracting Míchel is hopefully the first piece of a whole pyramid, because we are longing for prizes.”

Míchel is now the tenth trainer for the group since the summer of 2022. During that period, Ajax mainly had disappointing results. Only under Francesco Farioli did Ajax compete for the national title.
Not a club hopper
“We now have a trainer who is not a club hopper,” said Nagtzaam about the 50-year-old Spaniard. “He has been at Girona for the past five years and before that he served his contracts neatly. Let’s hope that this is the start of a successful period.”
Ajax’s last national title dates back to 2022. Given last season’s fifth place, ‘the scale’ seems far away. Yet Nagtzaam believes that the new trainer Michel can ensure better times. “We will simply become national champions.”
