Pantone of the year: how tradition is born

For more than twenty years now, the Pantone Color Institute punctually proclaims the color of the year. This, as mentioned, is a highly anticipated event for graphic artists, designers, make-up artists and advertisers who stick to the Institute’s identified trend color for their creations.

Pantone Inc. came founded in 1962 by Lawrence Herbert in Carlstadt, in New Jersey, and developed in 1963 the PMS – Pantone Matching System®a cataloging system that has become an international standard for color management in industry and chemistry.

In particular, this system it is used to classify colors and translate them into the CMYK printing system (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black) thanks to a practical code.

Pantone is an arbitrary code made up of two fields. The first can consist of a word, which identifies the colour, therefore red (red), or a two-digit number which refers to the family it belongs to.

This tool since 1963 it has determined a standard of codes which can be referred to unambiguously to faithfully reproduce certain colors anywhere in the world.

The choice of the color of the year

The Pantone Color of the Year is born in 2000. Since then, every year in December, after an accurate analysis by the experts of the Pantone Color Institute of the styles and preferences of businesses and consumers, the color of the year is announced.

The following year, however, Pantone celebrated the Fuchsia Rose 17-2031, a decisive and captivating color, capable of attracting the female universe. Later in 2002 it was the turn of the True Red 19-1664, an intense shade of red with a strong patriotic appeal. It should be noted that it was also chosen following the terrorist attacks of 11 September.

In 2021 Pantone chose not one but two colors, to celebrate the year: 17-5104 Ultimate Gray and 13-0647 Illuminating. The first represented gray and the second a warm yellow: a very particular combination, but one that wanted to convey a strong message of positivity, hope and stability.

It was the first time that the Institute chose a grey, while the idea of ​​celebrating two colors had already been adopted in 2016, when the Rose Quartz and Serenity. The two shades were meant to blend into each other, as an acknowledgment to the gender fluidity and as a drive for social progress.

For the current year, 2022, however, the color chosen was the Very Perian out-of-the-box tint that has not been selected as is usually done among the tints already present in the Pantone color palette, but was created from scratch. This is not only for a stylistic reason, but also for its strong evocative power.

He comes from the blue family and is distinguished by his calmness, but he is enriched by the warm notes of red and violet, which make it intense and energetic at the same time.
