Hey, all Pokémons! This is why these tiles are on the street

In various neighborhoods in Zoetermeer, the streets are decorated with colored tiles. There are several Pokémon figures on it. What can you do with them and who put them there? We asked some Pokémon fans in our city if they know more.

In the neighborhoods Buytenwegh, de Leyens, Seghwaert and Rokkeveen, the Pokémon tiles are located in different streets. The figures Leafeon, Dratini, Luvdisc and Unown, among others, are formed in mosaics on the street.

A unique place provides extra points

Pokémon fan and Zoetermeerse Wendy Verschoor explains to us in detail what this Zoetermeer initiative is. “There is a very active Pokémon GO community in Zoetermeer. With this game, you’re supposed to go out and play it together.” In Pokémon GO, you need to score as many points as possible by defeating Pokémons and getting rewards to progress through the game. The creator of this game has thought that a unique place, anywhere in the world, can provide extra points.

A stop or a gym

A virtual ‘stop’ or a ‘gym’ can be placed at these unique places. This can be, for example, outside in front of a unique building, or another place where only one exists. “Because the Pokémon players want as many stops/gyms as possible, a very creative group of players is working on mosaics of paving stones,” explains Wendy. “An active Pokémon player requests the stopper from the organization. That application must then be approved.”

social game

At the moment there are 47 Pokémon tiles in Zoetermeer and nine are still in the making. For Pokémon players, these are attractive places to score points. “It’s a very social event,” says Wendy. “We got to know each other through this game. Kids started it in 2016, but the adults have taken over. They play it alone or in groups. In addition, the tiles brighten up the neighborhood.”

Zoetermeerders Rita, Eline, Sandra, Marieke, Vincent, Janneke, Manon, Yvette, Tom, Juul, Jaime and Stella are the initiators of the Pokémon tiles and made the mosaics.
