Hewitt pushes a volunteer: suspended for two weeks

The Australian captain of the Davis Lleyton Hewitt Cup was suspended for two weeks by the ITIA after pushing and offending a 60 -year -old voluntary anti -doping companion, at the end of the Davis 2024 cup semifinal, lost from Australia against Italy in Malaga, Spain. The case was referred to an independent court. The same court confirmed the charge of offensive conduct, establishing that Hewitt’s actions “did not meet the legitimate defense requirements” and that his behavior “was not reasonable and proportionate”. Hence the two -week suspension. However, sanction suspended from 24 September to 7 October, so as not to be “unduly punitive” against Hewitt, affecting his Davis Cup calendar and to allow the presentation of an appeal before the entry into force of the sanction.

During the suspension, Hewitt will not be able to take part in all tennis activities, including training, mentoring, the game, the master’s office and other associated roles. Karen Moorhouse, CEO of the ITIA, commented: “The anti -doping staff plays a fundamental role behind the scenes in preserving the integrity of tennis and should be able to play their role without fear of physical contact. In this case, that limit has been clearly exceeded and we had no choice but to intervene”.
