Van de Wouw was by far the fastest. Iana Burlakova was only a bit faster during the first lap and a half, but after that Van de Wouw went much faster than the Russian’s schedule and shot to a new world record: 1.03.121.

Van de Wouw already became European champion in the kilometer time trial in Zolder, Belgium, in February. It is her third gold of this World Championship after the team and individual sprint.

Lavreysen and Hoogland to the last eight

Harrie Lavreysen and Jeffrey Hoogland have reached the quarter-finals of the sprint tournament at the Track Cycling World Championships in Chile. Lavreysen, who can win the sprint world title for the seventh time in a row on the Santiago cycling track, was too strong for the British Hamish Turnbull.

Hoogland defeated the German Henric Hackmann. The tournament ended for Tijmen van Loon. He lost to Israeli Mikhail Yakovlev. The quarter-finals are at 10:56 p.m. Then for the first time it concerns two heats won.

Lavreysen, who can create a unique event in Santiago if he conquers four world titles, was trumped by the British Matthew Richardson in the qualifications over 200 meters. The world record holder, who previously competed for Australia, had the best time with 9.210 seconds. Lavreysen was just behind: 9.306. Both, like numbers 3 and 4 of the qualifications, were allowed to skip the first round.

That did not apply to Hoogland, who defeated the Italian Stefano Moro in the first round. Van Loon was also too strong for the Argentinian Lucas Oscar Vilar.
