How warlike is the Chinese military vuurwerk? Taiwan expert Sense Hofstede (29) knows how to follow Nancy Pelosi’s job on Taipei. ‘We gaan exciting tijden tegemoet.’
Sense Hofstede (National University of Singapore) serves over three weken zijn doctorate scriptie in over de relations van China met Taiwan en Singapore en publiceerde al meermaals bij het vermaarde Clingendael Instituut. Hij kent de Chinese en Taiwanese politiek as zijn broekzak.

Pelosi loofde Taiwan as een van de meest vrije democratieën. Heeft ze gelijk?
“When it comes to international rankings, Taiwan is the best democracy in Asia. Tien jaar terug had den ze nog problems with corruption in stemmenkoperij, since that is voorbij. Taiwan heeft wel een vrij conflictueuze democracy, omdat the largest partijen fundamentele meningsverschillen hebben over de staatsinstituting.
