“He’s really cranky in real life!”

Bas Smit is not always as hysterical and jolly as it seems in his stories on Instagram. One of his followers saw him sitting with blood at the bar of his own brasserie.

Bas Smit, who is obsessed with attention, has an incredible number of followers and because of his hysterical stories on Instagram, they have a certain expectation when they encounter him in real life, for example in his brasserie. From all over the country, women with a short spicy haircut come to the business of Bas and his wife Nicolette van Dam.

Grumpy at the bar

Bas sometimes finds that difficult, he tells The Entrepreneur Live XL† “That’s a bit of the downside. It does have an advantage that you have a large audience, but the disadvantage is also that audience frolic around you all day.”

The other day he was sitting at the bar with a bloody grumpiness. “Recently I was eating a carpaccio at the bar in our brasserie and I just see someone posting: ‘Well, Bas Smit… He’s not that cozy at all. He was looking very grumpy.’ So yes, I have to keep an eye out too. Nowadays I am eating carpaccio with such a smile!”

Pros and cons

It’s give and take, Bas explains. “It has its pros and cons. We consciously keep our children out of it. Other than that I don’t have that many drawbacks. I always find it pleasant and fun.”

Those docile people also make Bas an incredible amount of money. “So we’re doing the Amsterdam Summer, for example, and then we still have to sell 50,000 tickets. I don’t do that with television, because I don’t get on TV. I don’t do it on the radio either. I am my own channel. We are our own channel.”

weird dude

So you can’t start snapping at those people, says Bas. “Those 50 thousand people buy a ticket because of me. If those people come and want to have their picture taken, then you’re a weird guy if you say: ‘It’s not possible.’ It is give and receive, but that balance is good.”

Finally, why do we never hear Bas talk about politics? “I am not involved in politics at all. That’s why I don’t post about it. You can only go wrong with that these days. I am even more superficial online.”
