Talent’s contract is expiring

Last summer, Borussia Mönchengladbach turned down an offer for 18-year-old defensive talent Lukas Ullrich at Hertha BSC. The contract of the captain of the German U19 national team on the Spree expires in 2023. While the capital club confirms that they want to fight again for the youngster to stay, a report by the “pictureAccording to the newspaper, in addition to Gladbach, other Bundesliga teams are making efforts for the left-back. The player’s father meanwhile has doubts about the prospects at Hertha, there is no offer for an extension.

Ullrich has made twelve appearances for Berlin’s second-choice team in the Regionalliga Nordost this season and contributed to four goals. At the end of this week, the homegrown player trained with the professionals of trainer Sandro Schwarz for the first time in a long time. He has not yet been in the Bundesliga squad, but Schwarz had recently promised the talented time in the second half of the season when asked: “Definitely! Ulle is in training with us, plays for the German U19 and collects game practice with our U23. He is a great talent that we would very much like to extend. But it’s up to Ulle to go through the door with us.”

A few days ago, however, Ullrich’s father Ulf had doubts about the coach’s statements to the newspaper, although he was “very happy” about them: “I think it’s a dream for every Berlin youth player to be able to play in the Berlin Olympic Stadium. I find the atmosphere there outstanding. My son Lukas has the same feeling. However, I currently have doubts that Lukas actually has a perspective at Hertha BSC. On the one hand, Lukas has been training with the U23s again for quite a while – with a few exceptions – and not with the professionals. So I don’t share the head coach’s opinion. There is no open door. And there is also no basis for an ‘extension’ because there is currently no concrete offer.”

Quotes that should have been noted at Hertha management level. There it was recently announced at the general meeting that, also for financial reasons and with a view to consolidation, they would increasingly rely on talent from their own ranks in the future. They want to “make a virtue out of necessity with our youth academy,” said President Kay Bernstein. In the case of Ullrich, time seems to be running out, according to “Bild”, in addition to Borussia Mönchengladbach, Werder Bremen, Eintracht Frankfurt, VfB Stuttgart and TSG Hoffenheim have put out feelers for the young talent. Several second division clubs and the French clubs Stade Rennes and Girondins Bordeaux are also interested.

Agent: Hertha talent Ullrich should become “a Bundesliga player in the medium term”.

At Hertha, the contracts of the regular left-backs Marvin Plattenhardt and Maximilian Mittelstädt expire at the end of the season – it is not unlikely that you will want to hold initial talks with the two established professionals before you approach Ullrich with a more specific offer. His advisor Umut Schleyer from the “Sports Entertainment Group” made it clear in the newspaper: “Our agency is not about stuffing Lukas’ pockets in the short term, but about him becoming a Bundesliga player in the medium term. The basic prerequisite for this is that he is initially an integral part of the training operations of the first team and then later becomes a regular there. A lot is possible on the way there.”

Ullrich’s possible future has also been hotly debated in the Hertha Forum at Transfermarkt for a few days. “Without wanting to put Ullrich on a podium right now – that he will have a great Bundesliga career is less certain than with Luca Netz – but after all the experiences of recent years it would be very important if a nationally and internationally highly regarded talent came out our NLZ stays with us for a change and doesn’t take off for lack of perspective, of all things,” writes, for example, user “HerrThaner”.

“FHain_United” meanwhile says: “I am now a bit ambivalent about this topic. I would not give talents without a valid contract more than 2-3 short assignments. Let’s not kid ourselves: the players don’t leave us because of the lack of perspective. It’s clearly about money and nothing else.” User “ZeroGrabbity” writes: “I always wonder how people think that an 18-year-old could even begin to solve one of our problems. Ullrich may be a great talent, but that’s about it.” (Click here for the discussion in the forum)
