Berlin’s sports senator Iris Spranger has brought another location into play in the debate about a new football stadium for Hertha BSC. But the Berliners would have to play for more years in the Olympic Stadium.
“We still have a lot of open space on the edge of the Maifeld where you could put a smaller stadium,” said the SPD politician to the online portal “rbb24” on Thursday. However, she expects the club “that Hertha will extend the season in the Olympic Stadium until 2030,” Spranger said.
Hertha actually wanted to open its new stadium in 2025. The Maifeld itself is a listed building. “I want Hertha to get a new football stadium,” said Spranger. But the proposal must now be thoroughly examined. According to the report, Hertha should also adjust the size of its stadium plans.
Endless argument about the new stadium
There has been disagreement between Hertha, the city and other parties concerned about the location of the new stadium for years. Finally there was an approximation. The three locations that were mainly up for debate – on the Maifeld, the Olympia site and in the area of the former Tegel airport – all have different problems.

So far, Hertha has preferred a building on the Olympic site on Rominter Allee, where there are still residential buildings. Berlin’s governing mayor Franziska Giffey (SPD) told the BZ last week: “This can only happen in agreement with the residents. They need an attractive alternative housing offer. Whether there can be an agreement is still completely open.”
Spranger is even more critical of this location: “We will not have any tenants leave the houses.”
According to the “rbb” report, a local riding club could be affected by the Maifeld location, which has so far refused to move.
