One day after the successful rescue in the relegation, President Werner Gegenbauer resigned from Hertha BSC.

After the Bundesliga soccer club initially contradicted corresponding reports on Tuesday, Gegenbauer then announced his step in the evening.

There are moments for new beginnings, he explained. “And I think and feel that such a moment has come today. With my decision, I would like to initiate a new beginning for the future of Hertha BSC,” wrote Gegenbauer. The 71-year-old had led Hertha BSC since 2008 and had been heavily criticized in the past.

The Hertha team had only secured continued affiliation with the Bundesliga on Monday evening with a 2-0 win at Hamburger SV in the relegation second leg.

In Berlin, a withdrawal from Gegenbauer before the general meeting on Sunday had been expected for a long time. There he might have been threatened with being voted out.

In his statement, Gegenbauer emphasized that the current disagreements with investor Lars Windhorst played no role in his decision. “This dispute was never a personal one,” emphasized Gegenbauer. It was a controversy between Hertha BSC and Windhorst’s Tennor Holding.
