Hertha BSC | Widow of Kay Bernstein († 43) reports: “Overwhelmed”

Hertha President Kay Bernstein recently died unexpectedly at the age of 43. Now his wife has turned to the club’s fans.

The widow of Hertha President Kay Bernstein, who died suddenly on January 16th at the age of just 43, addressed the fans before the capital club’s quarter-final in the DFB Cup. “I would like to thank you for your incredible sympathy in every respect. It gives the family and me a bit of comfort during this incredibly difficult time,” wrote Eileen Bernstein-Rose in the Hertha BSC newsletter to the members: “Everyone overwhelms me smallest but sincere gesture, every kind word, every line of your banners.”

Bernstein’s death caused great consternation, particularly among the people of Herthan, but also far beyond. The former ultra surprisingly won the election as president in June 2022. He wanted to lead the club, which had to cope with relegation from the Bundesliga in the summer of 2023, to success again with the “Berlin Way”.

“Let us please continue the Berlin path together”

“Kay not only touched us every day with his unconditional love as a husband and dad, but also you, with the Berlin path he took, for Hertha BSC,” explained Eileen Bernstein-Rose: “So please let us continue the Berlin path together ! For Kay, for Hertha BSC – in the heart!”

With a view to the game that evening in the Olympic Stadium at home, where a Hertha professional team has never been in the DFB Cup final, against second division rivals 1. FC Kaiserslautern, she was quoted as saying: “But today it’s time “Victory! And thus come a little closer to Kay’s and our dream of the trophy! You are there, I am there.”

Fabian Drescher, currently acting president of Hertha BSC, explained that he not only wanted to agree with the words, but also underline them. “Eileen gives voice to our feelings and manages to describe the magnitude of this loss. But in addition to her words, which are equally an obligation for us, I am encouraged by how we have dealt with the situation together up to this day,” he wrote .
