Most valuable professional in the squad
Santiago Ascacíbar flushes Hertha BSC with fresh money. Loaned to Club Estudiantes de La Plata, the midfielder will stay with the Argentinian club beyond the end of the season, the club announced on Friday. Accordingly, Ascacíbar signed until the end of 2026, Estudiantes secures 90 percent of the economic rights to the 26-year-old. The Argentines were able to keep the former national player thanks to a purchase option that, according to the “Bild” newspaper, was 3 million euros. “TyC Sports”, on the other hand, named 2.3 million euros (2.5 million US dollars) as a fee.
Weiser, Lazaro & Co.: The most expensive Hertha sales
Ascacíbar’s contract with Hertha would have originally expired next year. The right-footed player switched from VfB Stuttgart to the capital in January 2020 for EUR 10 million and played 53 games in which he scored one goal and two assists. With the Berliners, Ascacíbar had secured relegation last season before he was no longer expected to play a role. After spending the first half of the season on loan at US Cremonese in Italy, he moved on to his youth club Estudiantes in the winter. “It’s for personal reasons. We knew that he wasn’t so happy with Cremonese and was incredibly homesick for Argentina,” commented Hertha’s sports director at the time, Fredi Bobic, on the premature termination of the loan and the further transfer.
Ascacíbar is a seed at Estudiantes and has featured in 18 games (three goals/one assist) in all competitions, even captaining once. In addition, with a market value of EUR 6.5 million, he is by far the most valuable professional in the squad.
