Hertha players Fabian Reese and Nader Jindaoui paid emotional tribute to the late club president Kay Bernstein. “I remember the moments after our games when we fell into each other’s arms, beaming with joy, electrified to the tips of our hair and full of happiness,” wrote 26-year-old Reese on Instagram after Bernstein’s unexpected death at the age of 11 was announced 43 years. “These precious moments are a chapter in my heart – from today with a golden lock and grateful to have been able to experience them.”

Reese has been playing in Berlin since last summer and has become a key player and crowd favorite. “We as the Hertha family have a big task and Kay would like us to move even closer together,” wrote the winger. “Feel like you’re being shouted at with passion and hugged tightly, this time my eyes aren’t wet with joy…”

Jindaoui also found moving words: “I wasn’t afraid of falling because I knew I had your support. You believed in me when many wrote me off. “I’ll never forget that,” the 27-year-old wrote. “Rest in peace Kay. History will continue to be written, for you and the Berliner Weg.” Numerous other professionals from the club also remembered Bernstein.

In June 2022, the former Hertha Ultra and communications manager Bernstein was surprisingly elected President of Hertha against the favored CDU politician Frank Steffel and another competitor. He became the successor to Werner Gegenbauer, who had led the club for a long time. It was a victory for the active fan scene and a crushing defeat for the club’s establishment. Bernstein was once the lead singer in the Ostkurve and was involved in the fans’ social projects.

The sadness over Bernstein’s death is huge throughout the entire club. There will be a public training session on Wednesday at 2 p.m., to which numerous fans are expected to come to honor the president. On Sunday (1:30 p.m./Sky) the second division team starts the second half of the season against Fortuna Düsseldorf in the Berlin Olympic Stadium.
