negotiations started
At the beginning of the year, former Hertha managing director Fredi Bobic announced that captain Marvin Plattenhardt and the “old lady” would part ways in the summer. At the beginning of March, however, the new sports director Benjamin Weber opened the door again for a possible extension with the ex-national player, whose working paper in the capital expires at the end of the season. The 31-year-old has now commented on the current status of the future.

The full-back has been in the service of the Berliners since 2014, played a total of 230 competitive games and has only been missing Hertha coach Sandro Schwarz three times this season. “Marvin, as captain, is doing the games at the moment and we will have open-ended talks. (…) We’ll get our picture and have a conversation. We’ll see how that turns out,” Weber commented on the situation of the veteran about three weeks ago. According to reports, Plattenhardt turned down the club’s request in winter to forego around a third of his annual salary in the event of an extension. The latter is rumored to be 2.5 million euros, writes the “Picture“-Newspaper. When asked by the newspaper whether his attitude towards wages had changed in the meantime, the native of Filderstadt replied: “It’s not an issue for the outside world. I’m very professional there. I really enjoy listening to the conversations. I don’t know what will come of it either.”
Due to the uncertain sporting situation and the threat of relegation, the Bundesliga club, which slipped back to 16th place in the table after the recent bankruptcy against Hoffenheim, currently has to plan on two tracks. In the event of relegation, the Plattenhardt side was signaled a fundamental interest in continuing the cooperation – only then, however, does a discussion about the financial sense make sense. “Let’s see what happens. I’m relaxed and let myself be surprised,” says Plattenhardt.
With continued stable performances in the remaining nine games, the Hertha captain wants to positively influence both his place in the league and his own contract situation. The bitter defeat against TSG is “not easy to explain, even in retrospect. After that, every player understood that we were in a relegation battle. It’s also my job as captain to talk to the young players who don’t know a situation like this.” The mood within the team is “nevertheless good. We don’t let ourselves be upset,” said Plattenhardt, who added: “First and foremost, we have to stay up in the league.”
