Defensive all-rounder Márton Dárdai from Hertha BSC wants to follow in the footsteps of his father Pál and older brother Palkó and play for Germany’s European Championship group opponents Hungary. The former DFB U21 national player (8 appearances since March 2022) announced his decision on Monday evening Instagram known.

“I gave myself plenty of time to make a final decision, but I made intensive use of the days off at the end of last year to work with my family and advisors to make a decision that I feel good about not only now, but also in the future . It goes without saying that the decision was not easy for me, but I will play for Hungary in the future,” Dárdai wrote.

The Berlin native comes from the Hertha youth team and became a professional there in 2020 and has played 63 games for the first team so far (1 goal/4 assists). He had been through the German U-national teams since the U16, and he said: “I would like to take this opportunity to expressly thank all the German fans and, above all, all the coaches and coaching teams of the DFB. I know that I also owe my career to the German youth national teams and for that I say THANK YOU! But the decision is also an absolute matter of the heart and that’s why I’m incredibly excited to play for my parents’ home country in the future.”

Hungary will play in Group A at the 2024 European Championship against Germany (June 19 in Stuttgart), Switzerland and Scotland. In coach Marco Rossi’s squad, with a market value of 2.5 million euros, Dárdai would currently be the third most valuable defender after Attila Szalai, who has just been loaned to SC Freiburg from Hoffenheim (10 million), and Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez (20 million).among the 2023 nominated professionals).
