Hertha BSC: Kovac engagement probably off the table

Since leaving AS Monaco, Niko Kovac has been back on the coaching market. Due to his past in Berlin, the former coach of FC Bayern is often associated with Hertha BSC. However, the 50-year-old is said to have very different plans.

As “Sky” reports, Niko Kovac will not be hiring at Hertha BSC in the summer. Accordingly, an engagement of the native Berliners in his hometown is “as good as impossible”.

In his active career, Kovac played 242 competitive games for the old lady. No wonder that the former Croatian national coach is associated with his club, especially since it is currently unclear who will be on the sidelines at Hertha BSC in the coming season.

Tayfun Korkut is currently in charge of Berlin. But the 47-year-old’s working paper ends at the end of the season.

Whether Korkut receives a follow-up contract will largely depend on the sporting performance in the Bundesliga. After the botched second half of the season against 1. FC Köln (1: 3), Hertha is currently in 13th place.

Premier League instead of Hertha BSC?

But even with a change of coach, Kovac would probably not be available to the troubled Bundesliga club. According to “Sky”, the trainer would like to work in the Premier League in the future. A short-term change to a new club is therefore out of the question, it is said.

In his coaching career, Kovac has already been employed twice in the Bundesliga. Between 2016 and 2018, the former midfielder worked at Eintracht Frankfurt and made the Hessen from a relegation candidate to DFB Cup winner 2018. Then Kovac moved on to Bayern, where he was not happy despite winning the double in 2019.

Most recently, the Berliner coached AS Monaco. A few days ago, however, Kovac also had to pack his bags in the principality.
