Hertha BSC: Fixed farewell has “no effect” for Lukas Ullrich

Before moving to Gladbach

Lukas Ullrich does not have to fear any immediate consequences for the rest of the season after his decision to leave Hertha BSC. “’Ulle’ made that decision and it has no effect. He is a Hertha player until the end of the season. He’s in training, that’s when it’s decided what the squad looks like,” said coach Sandro Schwarz on Thursday.

The 18-year-old Ullrich announced internally on Tuesday that he would not accept a contract offer and would leave the Berlin Bundesliga club in the summer. According to reports, league rivals Borussia Mönchengladbach will be awarded the contract. “That says the essentials on the subject. It’s a longer term issue. The decision has been made and of course we accept it,” said Hertha’s sports director Benjamin Weber about the decision of the junior international.

At Hertha, Ullrich was unable to assert himself as a left-back this season against competitors Marvin Plattenhardt (31) and Maximilian Mittelstädt (25) and only played in the U23s in the Regionalliga Nordost. Half of the Bundesliga is said to have dealt with Ullrich, in addition to the “foals” Werder Bremen, Eintracht Frankfurt, VfB Stuttgart and TSG Hoffenheim were also said to be on the youngster.

The same route from Berlin to Mönchengladbach was followed by two other left-backs before Ullrich, Nico Schulz (2015 for 4 million euros) and Luca Netz (2021 for 2 million euros). However, it was recently heard from the Gladbach club environment that nothing had been signed yet. According to “Bild”, Ullrich no longer saw sufficient prospects at Hertha.
