Hertha BSC: Bobic about 50+1 elimination and creative planning after Corona

BSC Managing Director

Hertha managing director Fredi Bobic does not believe that the 50+1 rule would become less attractive for investors. “Maybe that would create more tension in the short term. But there’s a lot more grassroots work involved than just saying something has to go,” the 50-year-old said in an interview “Sports Illustrated”. The 50+1 rule in Germany stipulates that the parent club must always have the majority of votes in an outsourced corporation.

However, the ex-professional points out that the basics could also change. “Of course there will be constructs that are sometimes questionable and to be questioned. But that’s the development. Neither will I, nobody will be able to stop them,” said Bobic. “It remains to be seen where the most substance is. In the end, the monetary aspect always plays a role.”

Even if the Bundesliga cannot keep up financially with other leagues due to the rule, Bobic sees no disadvantages in terms of attractiveness: “We don’t have to hide. I think sometimes we make ourselves way too small. The league is an exciting league, a beautiful league to look at.” International successes such as winning the Europa League by Bobic’s former club Eintracht Frankfurt and the appearances of FC Bayern also reflect the appeal of the Bundesliga: “That’s why we don’t have to look at the orientate ourselves towards others, but live our values and our culture.”

Bobic revealed that planning was made more difficult due to the consequences of the corona pandemic. “It’s different than in previous years because the economic pressure is affecting the sport a lot more. Now you have to be more creative. Of course you can set the right course in the club. Also in the management, how we work together and how we want to advance Hertha BSC. We must try to radiate calm and be patient in all areas. It was a bit loud for us recently.” The club from the capital had only managed to stay up in the Bundesliga league through a show of strength in the relegation.

Although the former striker almost fell into the 2nd division after successful times at Eintracht Frankfurt with Hertha, he does not regret his move from the Main to the Spree. “You always have to see when you make that decision. Because of this, there are no regrets. It was time for me to do something different after five years. Anyone who knows my career knows that as a player or as a manager I have always taken on ambitious or difficult tasks,” said Bobic.
