Hertha BSC: Another scenario for a change of power

On and off the pitch, Hertha BSC has repeatedly had to put out several fires at the same time this season. While relegation is now at least within reach, work is being done behind the scenes on a change of power at the capital club’s management level. Another scenario is obviously conceivable here.

Large parts of the active fan scene want to release club president Werner Gegenbauer from his post. The 71-year-old is primarily responsible for Hertha’s descent, which is reflected not only in sporting terms, but also in the catastrophic external image and poor communication.

Therefore, Gegenbauer is to be voted out at the general meeting on May 29th. This requires a majority of 75 percent of the Hertha members present and entitled to vote.

Gegenbauer has been President of the “Old Lady” since 2008 and was only re-elected in 2020 with a narrow majority for another four years. If he is voted out, a new Hertha boss could be elected at an extraordinary general meeting.

Hertha BSC: Two candidates in Gegenbauer deselection

According to information from “Sport Bild”, another scenario is also conceivable in addition to deselection. As soon as the league in the current season is in the dry cloths, Werner Gegenbauer could resign on his own initiative in order to avoid being voted out.

Either way, potential candidates are already positioning themselves to succeed him. According to the sports newspaper, Vice President Thorsten Manske is also a candidate, as is Kay Bernstein. The 41-year-old was active in the Hertha ultra scene for a long time and can count on the support of large sections of the supporters. With him at the helm, the club in the capital should get back into calm waters.

The central point is the cooperation with investor Lars Windhorst. The Hertha financier is also viewed very critically by the fans, and Bernstein recently made this clear. “What does he really intend to do with his investment? I also think his timing in terms of public statements is catastrophic,” he told 11 Freund magazine. Therefore he wanted to talk to Windhorst at a table.
