Hermes delivery times during the Corona pandemic

Hermes Europe GmbH was founded in 2009 and is a subsidiary of the German trading company Otto Group. Hermes is also struggling with the effects of the corona pandemic and is responding with changed delivery methods.

As can be read on the company’s website, Hermes delivers packages from Monday to Saturday between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. As a rule, delivery takes place within one working day, regardless of the size of the shipment. In some cases, however, items may not arrive until the following day, depending on the recipient’s exact place of residence.

Hermes couriers have to deliver the parcels assigned to them within one day. If they don’t manage to do this, they have to work overtime, which increases the stress level. As figures from the Bundesverband Paket und Expresslogistik show, around 244,600 employees transported a total of 3.65 billion items a year in 2019, which is ten million items a day. This corresponds to an increase of 3.8 percent compared to the previous year.

Hermes: changes due to Corona

Parcel deliverers have also reacted to the corona pandemic and changed their delivery methods. Customers can receive their consignments at their front door without contact; all that is required is photo proof of receipt of the consignment.

Filing in the garage or garden shed has also been simplified by the Corona crisis, as recipients can now decide for themselves how and where they want to receive the parcel.

According to Hermes, no delays are to be expected for shipments within Germany. However, it can happen that you have to be a little more patient with parcels from abroad, since the controls at the borders have been intensified by the federal police.

Hermes in criticism

Complaints on the Internet about longer delivery times from Hermes increased this year, as reported by the consumer portal Chip. According to this, many customers receive a notification that the recipient could not be found at the destination and that a second delivery attempt will be made the next working day. However, the recipients are often at home at the time of the supposed delivery attempt and, as in Chip’s own experiment, were only able to accept the shipment from another deliverer just a few minutes before without any problems.

On the other hand, Hermes rejected the allegations: “The delivery practices, as you describe them, in no way correspond to our understanding of service and quality,” according to a request from Chip. One wants to subject the cases to a more detailed investigation and, if necessary, carry out follow-up training.

However, it must be noted that the volume of shipments in Germany increased enormously during the Corona crisis. According to a Hermes press release, “over the last few weeks [] around 1,200 additional delivery rounds.” Additional staff were also hired at the logistics locations to sort parcels.
