The cartoon cake is jaw-dropping.
Here’s a cake that really gets noticed. It stands out from the usual pastries on the coffee table right away.
An avid baking enthusiast and has successfully participated in cake competitions Ilona Tjurin says that last year cartoon cakes (cartoon cake or comic cake) were only seen on foreign social media accounts. They have landed in Finland since the beginning of the year. So it’s really about a cake craze fresh from the oven.

Tjurin decided to be one of the first to test the serial cake.
– It’s a fun trend. Different and memorable. I wanted to try for some birthdays how I succeed.
The experiment was successful, as the end result spoke volumes.
– People are amazed if it can be a real cake. At first glance, the cake does not look authentic.
The illusion of cartoon-like two-dimensionality can be achieved with a few tricks.
It can be obtained by making a marker mark on the surface of the cake with either cream or sugar paste. In fact, the entire cake is typically decorated with one or the other technique. When the decoration is done, all elements of the cake are marked with a “marker”.
In addition, the cake decoration should be over-the-top in style and have a lot of bold colors.
And the very first thing is to browse cakes made by others on social media and watch video instructions to get hold of the idea.
Tjurin advises to choose one angle from which to look at the cake. You should also draw the plan on paper.
Technically, the most difficult thing is to make black borders.
When working with sugar paste, you have to remember not to let the paste dry out. Then you’re in trouble.
But if the mass is well rolled and pressed in the hands until it is warm, it is flexible and easily shaped.
– Only display the sugar mass that you are currently working into the cake. Keep other masses in a plastic bag waiting. I myself once made the mistake of putting all the masses on the table at the same time. They dried up, says Tjurin.
There are tools for making sugar paste ribbon, if rolling by hand seems laborious.
The mass is made into a long thin strip, which is glued to the sugar mass on top of the cake with the help of water. The fingerprints can be smoothed out with the tool intended for that purpose, so that the tape becomes completely flat.
Like all special cakes, this one also requires careful preparation and time. It took Tjurin four hours to decorate his own cake.
– This is fun to do, even though it is tiring. I can spend a lot of time on other cakes as well, Tjurin laughs.
Sugar mass shares opinions. Few people – at least an adult – want to eat that many spoonfuls.
Tjurin thinks of an edible decoration made of sugar paste, which can however be left uneaten if desired.
– You can peel the mass off the top of the cake. It is rather a pretty decoration, but the cake maker is unlikely to be hurt if it is left uneaten.
Here’s how to make a cartoon cake
1. Think about what kind of decoration you will make and draw it on paper. Think about the colors already.
2. Bake the cake and fill it like any other filled cake.
3. Frost the cake with, for example, meringue cream. The cream hardens in the refrigerator and prevents the sugar mass from drying out. It’s a matter of taste whether you decorate with sugar paste or cream. However, you will get a more accurate result with sugar paste.
4. First frost the cake with one sugar mass color and then shape the other parts. Attach the parts to the cake with water.
5. Finally, border all the edges of the cake and the color changes with black sugar paste ribbon.
6. When decorating, remember to put the cake in the fridge from time to time so that it stays good.
