Here’s how to cut hair at home – hairdresser’s tips

Cutting hair at home is almost always a doomed idea, but with the tips of a professional, you avoid the typical pitfalls.

IdHair trainer Heidi Alastaloa laughs when asked for tips on cutting hair at home.

– A friend of mine just went to the door to ask how he could fix the notch in the operation, but it can’t be improved, Alastalo sighs.

The idea that Finnish thin and thin hair is easy to cut is, in fact, completely wrong.

– The thicker, coarser and curler the hair, the easier it is to cut, because the flaws do not show up so easily. Instead, in typical Finnish, thin and thin hair, every cut is immediately visible.

Thus, in home surgery, covering up one error easily leads from the ditch to the source, and the hair disaster is complete. Therefore, Alastalo cannot recommend home surgeries for a typical skandi hair.

Trimming the bangs is the only exception, as it may need to be leveled every two to three weeks, Alastalo thinks.

So if the situation is awkward, minimize the risks and follow these guidelines!

1. Invest in the scissors

– The most important thing in home surgery is what the scissors are like. I recommend either scissors for home shaving or quality scissors that are designed for less work, ie with tighter teeth than usual, Alastalo says.

– Craft or paper scissors should not be used under any circumstances. At home, the challenge is that the scissors are designed to cut larger material, so for fine hair, the cut is different.

Decent scissors become more expensive than a hair salon visit, but they can be a joy in a situation where the hair model often requires a little straightening.

2. Guy for help

You should ask a friend for a cutter if possible, as it can be difficult to observe your own hair and operate the scissors with the help of a mirror.

– The human eyes and corners naturally live and move a little when the scissors are brought close. It can be really hard to avoid, no matter how accurate you are, Alastalo reminds you.

3. Only cut dry hair

Hair behaves differently when wet, so at home it is safest to cut your hair only when dry.

– In damp hair, the swirl may settle differently, or you may have tensioned the hair in a completely different direction than it should.

4. Cut vertically, not straight

– Some of my colleagues may disagree with this, but I would cut it a little at an angle and keep the scissors a bit flat. So I wouldn’t cut straight and evenly, but a little vertically above the tips, giving the cutting line better control, Alastalo describes.

– This kind of technology is more merciful to small mistakes. If the scissors are not sharp enough and you cut straight, the end result is a bit skewed, no matter how you control them anyway.

A professional doesn’t even recommend pursuing a graphic straight line, but a natural-looking end result. Such a small unevenness is not disturbing to the eye.
