At the largest coffee festival in northern Europe, Helsinki Coffee Festivals, today, Friday 21.4. the best coffees of the year.
The winner of the filter coffees is the Colombian Special Roast of the Lappeenranta-based small roaster Lehmus Roastery, Colombia Pitalito Huila, Red Bourbon arabica coffee.
Filter coffee of the year was chosen for the seventh time.
The decaffeinated coffee of the year chosen for the first time is La Serrania Decaf, Colombia, from Good Life Coffee, a small roaster from Helsinki.
This year, the competition was a celebration of Colombian coffees. In both filter and decaffeinated coffee, there are Colombian coffees roasted in Finland among the top three.
The jury chose the coffees of the year from 20 coffees from different roasters.
The jury evaluated the sweetness, balance and aftertaste of the coffees and gave all the coffees an overall grade. The judges tasted the coffees blind.
The jury consisted of coffee professionals and influential people in the food industry, which included a restaurateur Markus Hurskainena coffee professional Matias Merikukkaproduction manager of Ekberg confectionery Sergei Muratov as well as representatives of the coffee competition’s main partner Wilfa, a coffee equipment specialist Niko Olkkonen and Anna Willberg.
– The filter coffee competition had a really high standard and very high quality coffees, says judge Matias Merikukka.
Filter coffees and decaffeinated coffees in the competition are prepared by an impartial professional barista.
To ensure the same quality of the coffees and the same preparation conditions, the competition coffees are made with a Wilfan Black Performance machine and the coffee beans are ground with Wilfan Uniform grinders. The preparation method was chosen so that you can easily taste the filter coffee of the year at home with similar taste experiences.
