With a drone or from an airplane you sometimes see logos or slogans in flower fields or the grass in the Dutch landscape. For some time now, above a piece of land on the Broekwegkade, you can see the well-known ‘mat beater’, formed by young willow trees.
Tenants
For years, the municipality of Zoetermeer rented out the piece of pasture to farmers along the Broekwegkade. A resident says: “We sowed grass there as fodder for our cows and sometimes we let some cattle graze there. Unfortunately, the municipality has stopped the rental and they have sown new trees.”

Pleasant landscape for bees
The municipality has planted the eight species of willow trees to create more biodiversity. Grass paths have been laid between the round shapes of the so-called meerbloem logo where it is less windy. This creates a more pleasant environment for the bees. So that is why the playful logo was chosen, and not as a promotion of the city, according to the municipality.

From the cycling and walking path to the Broekweg quay the logo is hardly visible, but from the air it is. That is why indebuurt has made images from a drone to show it to the whole of Zoetermeer!
