Berlin’s streets have more zebra crossings again. This year the Senate will loosen the funds for 18 new pedestrian crossings. But prices are skyrocketing.
So far, the necessary road conversion including lighting, marking and signage has cost an average of 35,000 euros. According to information from the Senate in response to an SPD request, the costs have now doubled – up to 150,000 euros are due for each measure.
Many wishes are still in the application backlog: In the current year alone, 133 approved zebra crossings are still on hold. Funding has not yet been confirmed. These include small projects like the 25,000 euros for Wiesbadener/Johannisberger Strasse, but also expensive ones like the two on Reichenberger/Lausitzer Strasse (226,170 euros).
In order to build faster, the transport administration offered the districts to manage the tender, award and construction – only five districts accepted the offer to reduce the implementation backlog.
There are now around 500 zebra crossings again in Berlin. Before reunification, their number had shrunk from 1,600 to 103 in the western part alone – traffic planners tended to rely on traffic lights.
The districts will receive money from the Senate for these zebra crossings in 2023:
