Henny Meijer in De Kick-off: ‘Too little patience to stay with Ajax’

At FC Groningen, Henny Meijer won the golden shoe in 1991 as the best player in the Eredivisie. Four years earlier, the striker had been brought to Ajax by Johan Cruijff. But when he ended up on the bench in Amsterdam, he opted for a transfer to FC Groningen. “I wanted to play football. Otherwise I would have started to beat myself up,” says the now 61-year-old Meijer on TV tonight in our talk show De Aftrap.

Until the winter break, Meijer scored ten goals for Ajax in the Eredivisie in the ’87/’88 season. In the second half of the season he only scored against Feyenoord, after which he left for Groningen despite his ongoing contract.

No sense in the back and forth

In addition to Meijer, another former striker is also joining: Michiel Hemmen played football at FC Volendam, SC Cambuur and AGOVV Apeldoorn, among others. At the time, Hemmen was part of the selection of trainer Stanley Menzo who became champion of the first division in 2008. However, Hemmen got so few playing minutes that he did not feel like the honoring at the Heen en Weer. “Of course I now regret that,” said the now 35-year-old Hemmen.
