Very bummed for Henny Huisman. Due to his rather early retirement from TV, he is getting less and less comfortable. Even business class flying is no longer an option. “I lost my buffer.”
Henny Huisman was the big star of RTL 4 in the nineties with ratings hits such as the Soundmixshow and the Surpriseshow. In 2002, when the presenter was only 51 years old, that collaboration came to an abrupt end. He had to make way for the much hipper Idols with a new presentation duo.
House with swimming pool
Fortunately, Henny was able to buffer quite a bit in his television years, but because his TV retirement came very early, he now has to gear down a gear financially.
The presenter emphasizes that he is not yet living on welfare or anything like that. “Let me put it this way: I have a nice house on Bonaire with a swimming pool. I live very nicely here in Castricum and there is no mortgage on it. That’s pretty much what I’m left with,” he explains in the Party.
No business class
Henny realizes that his second home is a luxury, but flying business class to Bonaire is no longer an option. “Added together it is of course very nice and I still have a nest egg to just live a bit on. But I don’t fly business class or anything.”
Those RTL millions are now a bit over. “I have always been very open about that: when I was 52 I was chased away from RTL. I am now 71. Everything I had buffered there, I have lost over the years anyway. After almost twenty years, that source has more or less dried up.”
pity
Pray for Henry? No that is not necessary. “No one should feel sorry for me, on the contrary. But I had thought that I would be good at RTL until I was 65.”
Hasn’t he closed that chapter yet? “I had all my friends there, so I always thought: I’ll stay there. But it wasn’t. I ended up at the EO. It wasn’t bad or anything, but less. At the time, the real revenue model was with RTL.”
